Frequently Asked Questions

Is reflexology safe during pregnancy ?

Reflexology is very safe in pregnancy for all women, there are only a few exceptions to this which include women who have blood clots, placenta previa, pre-eclampsia or have had any vaginal bleeding during any part of the pregnancy. All of these conditions would require permission from your midwife, which I can help with if I feel it would be appropriate to treat you-I am happy to discuss this further if you contact me.
Reflexology works in harmony with your body and carrying a baby is the most natural event women will ever experience. Many midwifes are accepting of Reflexology in pregnancy.

I have ticklish feet does reflexology tickle ?

The pressure used in Reflexology is deeper than a tickle so it will not tickle you. If you have ticklish feet I have found it is an excellent strenthener to ticklish feet and after a few treatments you will probably find your feet are much hardier to being tickled!

Can I have reflexology in the first 3 months of pregnancy ?

I am happy to treat in the first three months of pregnancy and I have experienced the therapy to be of great benefit for such issues as morning sickness, changes in bowel habits, feeling emotional and tiredness. But I am aware of worries of the mother-to-be in this circumstance and I prefer to discuss treatments before carrying out a treatment. I always suggest if you have doubts about the therapy and will be worried when you attend treatments this can then have the reverse effect of the therapy anyway so in such a case I am happier to treat after three months—you still have 6 months to go!

Does it hurt ?

Occasionally reflexology can be slightly painful; more often than not various reflexes will feel tender when worked on. Any sensation like this is what we reflexologists are looking for! An uncomfortable area is an area of extreme congestion, this means that the area of the body that the reflex corresponds to is in great need of a boost, so these areas will be worked to help ease them out and over time (this can happen in one treatment or it may take quite a few treatments) the pain/tenderness will become less meaning the area in the body has strengthened. I always work with you in mind and I will not persist on anything which is excruciatingly painful we work together to try and uncongest this area.

What are my qualifications ?

I gained my Diploma in Reflexology Caritas Natural Health Clinic in 2004 and have been practising since. I have furthered my knowledge by studying ‘The Meridians and the five elements in association with Reflexology’ and ‘Maternity Reflexology’ at post graduate level.
I actively take part in Continuous Professional Development courses and am a member of the Midlands North & West Reflexologist group.
I am also a member of ‘The Association of Reflexologists’.
I also hold a degree in Natural Sciences with Biology.

How does reflexology work ?

Good question! The fact is that reflexology does show an overall improvement with just about everyone that attends treatments is evidence in itself, but in regards to the science behind the therapy not much can be said. There are many theories from using the meridian system of energy through the body to the reflex points acting as reflex loops from the feet to the specific area within the body and sending nerve impulses to these areas.
I have been working with reflexology now for nearly 3 years and the results have been incredible, rapid and positive. To me the most amazing feeling of belief is through the feet of pregnant women-the baby can be observed over the 9 nine months through the feet and the swelling of the abdomen also occurs on the abdomen reflex in the foot! Seeing really is believing!

Can reflexology help me ?

Generally Yes, but this does depend on you and your health and how long it has taken you to reach this body state. Reflexology works differently for each individual and this question can only be addressed in such a manner-so to discuss this further please do contact me.

How many treatments will I need ?

Once again this is very dependent on each individual, I have clients who attend weekly to keep their health under control and I have others who come every 4-6 weeks for a ‘top up’. The treatment regime will be completely dependent on you, your condition, your lifestyle, your emotional state, your physical state and the time it took to get into this bodily state. Number of treatments will be discussed at your first consultation and we` work together to achieve the best possible treatments plan.

I can’t afford treatments ?

Please do not think of these treatments as an expense, to me they are a true investment into your health as reflexology works on strengthening your body to work at its optimal health. This in turn can lead to less ‘ill’ time, more time in your life-through feeling more energetic/healthy, less prescription medications and more stress reduction.
If you still feel this question arises with you I am more than happy to discuss various options with you.

My feet are ugly is this ok ?

Firstly to me no foot is ugly and secondly each foot tells a different story, so please do not let this put you off-it brings even more colour into my therapy room! Variety is the spice of life after all!

I have a verruca/corn on my foot can you still treat me ?

Such areas can often be covered with some tape during a treatment giving no excuse for not coming along. But if it is very painful for you in your foot then please come along once the pain has eased.

Are there any conditions you can’t treat ?

Yes, if you have any of the following I cannot treat you:

• DVTS/Blood Clots
• Phlebitis
• Broken bones in the foot

If you have any of the following I may be able to treat you but I would need to discuss your health further with you before any treatments are carried out. I also may need to obtain a letter of consent from your GP/consultant:

• Cancer
• Infectious disease
• Fevers
• Epilepsy
• Diabetes
• IVF
• Any condition which you are currently being treated for under doctor/consultants instructions.
